Em geral, promove a cooperação internacional e tem como objetivo contribuir para a paz e segurança no mundo por intermédio da educação, da ciência, da cultura e das comunicações.
Essa sigla se faz pela combinação das letras iniciais das palavras em inglês - United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization- que se traduz para o português como Organização das Nações Unidas para a Educação, a Ciência e a Cultura(UNESCO).
